UNI – Ian Callum jaguar Director of design 9/11/17

HyperFocal: 0jaguar-i-pace-rear“design is creating order out of chaos, but chaos is often required to inspire creativity” Ian Callum. After attending the Ian Callum lecture he has brought some insightful ideas to the forefront of my mind and made me rethink about concepts which I thought I had figured out. The most important point I think I took from him was that every line on a car should be beautiful, before I was thinking as a car as a collective of lines which work when they are all put together, but now after Ian saying this I looked at cars as they drove past me on my way home, and he was right each line had a level of finesses to it granted not on all cars but especially with supercars, each line is special and I believe this may be where I have been going wrong with my concept designs. A second point which Callum’s made me think about was to never compromise always work as hard as possible to make your vision a reality, if a certain technical figure doesn’t work with the design then don’t just roll over, try and fight to make the design work or fight to get that technical figure tweaked to that it’s the best of both worlds. This lecture sure gave me some strong design rules which I hadn’t thought about, the next of which was the importance of understanding the brand/heritage of the brand, so for jaguar their roots are in motorsport so they want to make all their cars feel fast and sporty which I think they do very well, but it is something  I neglected to delve into, the last big point I took from this lecture was stance, stance is king, granted this is an aspect I had put a lot of thought into in the past, but amongst the rush to get work done and learning new skill I didn’t put as much thought into stance to what I should have. Ian Callum has given me a lot to think about, but they are all things which I need to get a grip on to succeed in the industry and for that, I am grateful that he gave us the time to learn from a true giant of the automotive industry.
